HUNDREDS OF GOLD COAST YOUTH CONVERGE ON SEA WORLD RESORT FOR THEIR SAY ON THE FUTURE
08 May 2026
Subjects: IMPACT Youth Summit.
E&OE…………………………………………………………………………………………………
Rhonda Sharratt:
Angie Bell MP, good morning.
Angie Bell MP:
Good to be with you.
Rhonda Sharratt:
Thank you for your time. This is the fourth year of the summit that you started. Tell us about it.
Angie Bell MP:
I’m very proud of it. This is the largest IMPACT ever with 220 young people here today and tomorrow. And I am sure next year will be bigger and better again.
Young people aged between 15 and 24 on the Gold Coast to be Impactors in our community. To have new opportunities to meet others, to expand their outlook and skills, and use those skills into the future.
With thanks to Karen Phillips OAM who has worked very closely with me as Program Director. With thanks to Sea World Foundation as the diamond partner, without them we couldn’t do it. Also, to Sea World Resort, to Griffith University and Southern Cross University who look after us here as well. It is absolutely fabulous. For young people, we are lighting up their way with new opportunities.
Rhonda Sharratt:
Not only school students but young people after school age?
Angie Bell MP:
That is right. The age of the youth portfolio that I am Shadow Minister for is 15 to 24. We do have people here from a range of backgrounds including those not at school. There are a number of public and private schools from the Gold Coast as well as a number of performing arts schools and community partners across the Gold Coast who send their young people here as well. There are also teachers here.
We have a range of guest speakers. We have just heard from Karni Liddell OAM, the Paralympian, who talked to our young people about her journey with the theme of how each of us can make choices and inspiring them to be “head nodders and hope givers”. That is what IMPACT is all about.
Rhonda Sharratt:
The youth of the Gold Coast today sometimes gets a bad reputation. Do you think that is fair?
Angie Bell MP:
What we do get at IMPACT is to expose our young people from public and private schools and some who may not be at school, to people from a variety of backgrounds, so they can gain skills. By hearing from our inspirational speakers they are inspired to be the best person they can be and to support others in doing that in our community as well. To find that special thing in their lives they love, to build it up and keep it for their future.
Rhonda Sharratt:
You cover quiet a lot of topics at the Summit.
Angie Bell MP:
Absolutely. We assist them, inspire them and give them an opportunity to meet new people and to move forward with their lives.
Rhonda Sharratt:
Angie Bell MP thank you for your time.
Angie Bell MP:
My pleasure, thank you.
ENDS.
