LABOR BEACHED ON ALGAL BLOOM
Scientists have once again called for government action on the South Australian algal bloom that has resulted in over 14,000 dead marine creatures.
They have requested an immediate investment of $10 million to research the impact of the bloom and inform plans for the next occurrence.
Shadow Minister for the Environment, Angie Bell has today called on the government to once again consider these requests.
“After ignoring eminent scientists in South Australia for the last 18 months it’s high time the Minister is on the front foot, not the back foot with yet another funding request,” Ms Bell said.
“It’s unsurprising that the Labor Government has sat idly by as the toxic algal bloom ravages marine life, the coastal ecosystem and local fishing industries.
“Over the last three years, Labor has been on a go-slow when it comes to environmental policies and $14 million for the clean up alongside a ten minute beach trip is not good enough.
“The South Australian coastline has been left decimated, and for some of these communities it’s too little, too late.”
The Coalition has proved to be committed to supporting the coastal communities affected by the crisis after a Senate Inquiry drew bipartisan support on Wednesday.
This Senate inquiry, led by the Coalition, is an important next step to hold this government to account on their failings.
